What is a Brainstorming Mastermind?
Well known Leaders such as Walt Disney, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Andrew Carnegie—to name a few—all had one thing in common that helped propel them to great success: all were a member of a mastermind group. Mastermind groups existed long before 1937, which was the year Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, coined the term. It is postulated that Hill wrote down this formula for success using information shared with him by business magnate Andrew Carnegie, who became one of the world’s richest men during the early 1900s.
Group Definition.
In the book by Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich, Hill describes a mastermind as the “Coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.” He says that when a group of minds come together, they essentially create an unseen, powerful force—a mastermind.
Masterminds generally have a lead person who starts the group to facilitate helping members achieve a specific common purpose such as starting and scaling a business. The facilitator’s role is always to highlight the exact purpose and reason for the group’s existence and its ongoing direction. If this is not made 100% clear from the beginning, then it is not a mastermind.
Typically, successful mastermind groups are relatively small in member numbers. This ensures everyone gets a chance to truly develop and grow as individuals, while also maintaining strong connections with their peers. That said, larger masterminds do exist and can work extremely well for their members. For example, Andrew Carnegie’s group consisted of around 50 members, while there are others of much larger numbers that facilitate well over 100 people.
It’s important to know that mastermind groups are in no way similar to networking events, neither do they constitute one-to-one or group coaching environments. This is because there is no one figure within the group that has authority over its members.
While there is a leader, that person’s sole function is to facilitate community-building among the group. Meaning, that business masterminds operate based on the premise of group participation at all times. No matter it’s brainstorming, giving feedback, or holding one another accountable, the group dynamic is always to stimulate, provoke, and elevate its members thinking and mindset to a higher level of awareness and consciousness.
